Sweats, glasses, and fuzzy slippers
March 24th, 2010
I’ve avoided adding a fan page to my social networking world mostly because the word fan doesn’t describe how I see you, my reader friends. In the nearly two decades I’ve been writing, I’ve never thought of my readers as fans. Many of you have read my books, corresponded with me through the years, and most recently, followed me into the cyber world of Facebook, Twitter, and my little corner of the web. I love it that some of you began reading my Amanda MacLean Inspirational romances in the 1990’s! You are most definitely friends, not fans!
The word fan (according to Webster’s) means an enthusiastic devotee or admirer of a celebrity, etc. A celebrity? I have to laugh. I’ll remind myself of that esteemed status the next time I clean out the litter box or scrub the commode. =)
Seriously, my agent, editor, and the marketing folks at my publishers, who know these things better than I do, suggested that it’s time to spread the word about my next book, THE SISTER WIFE. And in these times, they tell me, if you love your book and want people to read it, a writer must spread the word through social networking. I understand their thinking, but in my heart of hearts I see myself as a scribe in sweats, thick eyeglasses (contacts don’t work so well when writing 10-12 hours a day), and fuzzy slippers who dreams dreams and writes down those dreams so that others can enjoy them.
Taped to my monitor are the words: “I’ll climb to the lookout tower and scan the horizon. I’ll wait to see what God says, how he’ll answer my complaint.” (And I have to admit, when I’m on a tight book deadline, I have a tendency to whine.) “And then God answered: ‘Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in block letters so that it can be read on the run. This vision-message is a witness pointing to what’s coming. It aches for the coming–I can hardly wait! And it doesn’t lie. If it seems slow in coming, wait. It’s on it’s way. It will come right on time.”” Habakkuk 2:1-3 The Message
I station myself in front of my computer (or the ramparts, as some translations say), hands poised over the keyboard, and imagine you, my friends, who will someday read my words. I immerse myself in the vision-dream, and pray for patience, knowing that the story that emerges will be in God’s good time.
Blessings of peace and joy to you this day!
